Free Supertrend indicator for NinjaTrader 8, with TradingView's formula

The Supertrend is a line that trails price at a distance of several ATRs: it sits below price while the trend is up and flips above when price closes on the other side. Many traders use it as a trend filter or as a trailing stop.

NinjaTrader doesn't ship one, and the ones out there don't always match TradingView's. This one uses the same formula as TradingView's built-in Supertrend (ta.supertrend) and adds what people ask for most: arrows and alerts on bar close, colored bars, a higher timeframe without repainting and a second, slower Supertrend.

What the indicator draws

  • A green line below price in an uptrend and a red one above it in a downtrend, with a gap at every flip.
  • Same defaults as TradingView: hl2 source, Wilder ATR, period 10 and multiplier 3. Optional classic formula from KivancOzbilgic's script, which sometimes flips one bar later.
  • An arrow on the flip bar and an optional alert, always on the closed bar: no repainting.
  • Multi-timeframe: the 15-minute Supertrend on a 1-minute chart, using the last closed bar of the higher timeframe.
  • Optional double Supertrend (fast + slow, 14 and 6) with signals only in the slow one's direction.
  • Plots for strategies and the Strategy Builder: Line, Trend (+1 / -1) and Signal (+1 buy, -1 sell, 0 none).
The concept

How the Supertrend is calculated

It starts from the bar's midpoint (hl2) and adds and subtracts the multiplier times the ATR: with a 10-point ATR and a multiplier of 3, the bands sit 30 points away. The lower band can only rise while the trend is up and the upper band can only fall in a downtrend. When price closes beyond the active band, the trend flips and the line jumps to the other side.

How to use it

How to trade the Supertrend

A summary of the most common uses. Everything is set in the indicator properties.

  • Trend filter

Only buy with the line green and only sell with it red. Paired with your usual entry, it keeps you from trading against the main move.

  • Trailing stop

With the source set to Close it becomes a pure ATR trailing stop: the stop sits on the line and follows it until it flips.

  • Higher timeframe as a filter

On a 1-minute chart, the 15-minute Supertrend shows the bigger direction without switching charts. It updates one bar after the 15-minute bar closes, which is why the line looks stepped.

  • Double Supertrend

A slow one (14, 6) sets the trend and the fast one (10, 3) gives the signals: with "Signals only with the slow one", arrows and alerts only fire in the slow one's direction.

What the evidence says

The Supertrend is a trend follower: it works in clean trends and gives lots of false flips in a range. There are no public studies showing an edge on its own; use it as a filter or a stop, not as a complete system. It's a beta: if you see a difference from TradingView with the same settings and the same session, send us a screenshot of both.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does it match TradingView?

It uses the same formula as the built-in Supertrend (ta.supertrend) with the same defaults. To compare, use the same settings and a trading hours template with the same session (ETH on both): different sessions mean different bars and a different ATR.

Does it repaint?

No. Flips, arrows and alerts are decided on the closed bar. In multi-timeframe mode every chart bar takes the value of the last closed bar of the higher timeframe.

Can I use it in the Strategy Builder?

Yes. It has the Line, Trend (+1 up, -1 down) and Signal (+1 buy, -1 sell, 0 none) plots, plus the slow ones with the double Supertrend.
