KYC at Prop Firms: When They Ask and What Blocks You
You can buy, trade and pass the evaluation without identifying yourself, but you can't get paid. When KYC lands at each firm, which documents to prepare and the six reasons it gets rejected.

KYC is the identity check a firm runs before it hands you your money. And it almost always arrives at the worst possible moment: you've already passed the evaluation, already made the profit, you request the payout — and then they ask you to upload your ID.
The general rule is simple: you can buy, trade and pass the evaluation without identifying yourself, but you can't get paid. What changed in July 2026 is that the rule no longer holds at every firm.
July's change: Lucid verifies you before selling you anything
On 23 July 2026 Lucid Trading announced a procedural change that broke the industry norm. Their wording was literal: "due to an uptick in bad actors, new users that meet high risk criteria will be KYCed before being able to purchase their first account".
The announcement racked up 140,000 impressions and 52 replies on X, plenty of them angry. Lucid had to clarify the part that stung most: being asked for KYC at signup is not an accusation of fraud, it only means you share criteria with profiles already flagged. If you fail it, you go into a manual review queue.
It's an isolated move for now, but it points a direction: verify before the money moves, not after.
When each firm asks for it
| Firm | KYC moment | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Lucid Trading | At signup if you fit the risk profile; otherwise before the payout | Automated + manual review queue |
| Tradeify | At purchase for Instant Funding; on passing for everything else | Sumsub (identity) + Rise (payouts) |
| FundedNext | Before requesting your first Performance Reward | ID + liveness selfie + address if requested |
| TakeProfit Trader | Before your first payout | Automated in minutes; manual 24-48 h |
| Apex Trader Funding | Before your first payout | ID + proof of residence + bank account |
| My Funded Futures | Before your first payout | ID matching your registered country |
| Bulenox | Before the payout (no KYC at purchase) | Full identity verification |
| TradeDay, Top One, FFF, Earn2Trade | Before your first payout | Identity + payment provider |
The documents: what to have ready before you need it
This covers all eleven firms:
The golden rule: the same name in three places
This is why most KYC checks fail, and it's 100% avoidable.
The name on the document, the name you registered with at the firm and the holder of the bank account or wallet you'll be paid into have to be the same person, spelled the same way. Spanish double surnames cause more trouble than you'd think: if you registered with one surname and your ID carries two, expect a manual review.
Same with the country. My Funded Futures explicitly requires the document to match your registered country of residence. If you opened the account with one country and then upload a document from another, the alert fires.
Why it gets rejected
The causes are always the same ones:
- Expired document. Automatic rejection everywhere, no exceptions.
- Name mismatch between document, account and payout method.
- Restricted country. If you live in a listed country, KYC is rejected automatically no matter how perfect your paperwork is. This is how it gets detected.
- Illegible or cropped photo. The whole document has to be visible, no fingers over it and no glare.
- Old proof of address. More than three months and it's void.
- VPN running during verification. It raises the suspicion that you're hiding your real location.
How long it actually takes
At TakeProfit Trader the automated check resolves in minutes, and when the system can't validate the document it goes to manual review: the team works 24/5 and most cases close within 24-48 hours. That's the reasonable industry standard.
What falls outside that is chained manual reviews. If your case lands in a queue — risk profile, questionable document, change of country — you're talking days, not hours. And it's worth being honest here: no firm publishes a maximum turnaround commitment. If you've been stuck for more than three days, open a ticket and ask for a reference number; it's the only thing that speeds anything up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trade without having done KYC?
At almost every firm, yes. You can buy the evaluation, pass it and trade the funded account without identifying yourself. The wall is at the payout. The exceptions are Tradeify on Instant Funding and Lucid for risk profiles.
Does the firm's KYC cover getting paid?
No. They're two separate checks. The firm verifies who you are; the payment provider (Rise, Plane) runs its own so it can send you the money. Tradeify says exactly that in its help centre.
What happens if I fail KYC?
You don't lose the account automatically. You go into manual review and they ask for extra documentation. What you do lose is access to the payout until it's resolved.
Can they ask me for KYC twice?
Yes. Firms using Sumsub run ongoing screening against sanctions lists and politically exposed persons throughout the relationship, not just at the start.
And if I move country after verifying?
You have to update it. You'll need a document from the new country, proof of address and a bank account there. If the new country is restricted, you lose access to buying and to getting paid.
